One of the formative TV programmes of my childhood - showed me how many diverse areas of knowledge was out there, and that it was possible to be able to learn a reasonable amount of it.

I remember watching University Challenge on ITV when Bamber presented it and it was one of the few programmes on ITV that was broadcast without a mid-way commercial break.

As part of his preparation he looked through the questions to be used in each edition and added relevant notes to many of them which he used on air as and when he felt it was appropriate.
