Questions about 1gbs, I am losing speed between Router and PC
Hi,
So I have not used this forum for a long time, but I needed some tech help please. So I finally was able to get the 1gbs and got the Hub 4 today and installed it upon installing and activating it, the first speed test only gave me 880mbs down and 43mbs upload. So I then checked the router status of my router by typing https://192.168.0.1 into the address bar and checking the streams etc. I am getting 31 Down Streams in Docsis 3.0 and 4 Up streams in Docsis 3.0 but only 1 Down stream in Docsis 3.1 and 0 upload streams in Docsis 3.1. So I then kept doing speed tests on various sites speedtest.net, and the google one and many others. The speeds was just fluctuating so bad from anything as low as 50mbs down to 940mbs down and up was around 10mbs - 50mbs in those ranges every time. So obviously something is wrong. I then saw a thread on the VM community forum and someone mentioned SamKnows. So I did a speed test on same knows and here is the Result of that. https://www.cableforum.uk/images/local/2022/02/2.png So as you can see the speed from the VM network to the router is 1117mbs but yet the speed from the HUB 4 router to my PC is only 944mbs.......? So Why am I losing around 180mbs between router and PC? I am using a ethernet cable from PC connected directly into the HUB 4 router, so I should be getting the maximum speeds. I then thought could it be my computer not being able to handle the 1gbs speeds fully. So if that is the case I will tell you my motherboard and network driver names and model so you can let me know if it is those that is causing the loss in speeds? I really can not work out any other reason. So here is my motherboard model: ASUSTeK - PRIME B250M-A - Rev X.0x And this is the onboard network card driver on the above motherboard: Name [00000001] Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller So I would greatly appreciate anyone in the know to give me any ideas if it is MY PC or maybe a fault with my HUB 4 or maybe a network issue? I did ring VM up and they run some tests and did see there is an issue and they have created a case for the second line team to investigate etc. So not sure if that will fix it or again if it is just my PC not able to support the full 1gbs speeds? Thanks in advance DreamRJ ---------- Post added at 18:48 ---------- Previous post was at 18:45 ---------- Just ran another SamKnows test and clicked the button to view more metrics just incase someone asked. https://www.cableforum.uk/images/local/2022/02/3.png |

I think your speeds are falling under the expected tolerance of your gigabit nic

Re: Questions about 1gbs, I am losing speed between Router and PC
The simple reason you're losing around 180Mb is because your computer has a gigabit ethernet connection and the Virgin Media Hub im assuming you have the Hub 4 has gigabit ports. The maximum speed for gigabit ethernet is around 940Mb. The connection coming into your hub is over a gigabit. Unless you get the new hub 5 which has one 2.5Gb port and your computer has 2.5Gb ethernet you'll never see the full 1116Mb speed on one device.

OMG Check its spec. Have you no idea what you’ve bought and paid for?

Your answer is in here. You only have a gigabit Ethernet adapter.

Or would it mean my 1gb card will still not support it? So I would need to either upgrade my motherboard so it had a 2.5gbs card on it? Or can I just buy one and put it on my current motherboard? |

It is the NIC in your PC slowing it down a little. But come on it is still mighty fast. If your PC can accommodate a PCI e card you have to choose if it is worth it

i use PFsense to balance my ports in modem mode and have a 2.5Gbe network and can access the full speed. but its a fair bit of tinkering really to just get the extra 100odd meg https://www.speedtest.net/result/d/a...e-190a98ad579d |
Re: Questions about 1gbs, I am losing speed between Router and PC
Not that it matters what your PC has, the Hub 4 only has gigabit Ethernet port so can only deliver sub-gigabit speeds.
You can pair 2 or more ports up to pull the full speeds from it, but you need some networking skills and specialist kit to do that. |
Re: Questions about 1gbs, I am losing speed between Router and PC
Try running the speed test directly from your desktop using the app and not through a browser, close all browsers.

Re: Questions about 1gbs, I am losing speed between Router and PC
Ok thanks everyone for all the help. Really appreciated it. At least I now know haha.
What amazes me though is Why on earth are they still giving out HUB 4 of they have the HUB 5? Does not make any sense to me, surely it would be better to just send everyone the HUB 5 now? So now I have to ring them up again and explain I need the HUB 5 so I can maximize my speeds and I will then just buy a PCIe 2.5gig card as well. I mean of course I want to max it and get the maximum I can get. I waited a long time for my postcode to enable the 1gbs. I was basically 1 of the last to get it enabled. Which just totally angered me. Then I find out my PC is not capable of reaching the max speeds. So yeah thanks again all. Will ring them tomorrow and see if they can send me one at NO extra cost etc. |
Re: Questions about 1gbs, I am losing speed between Router and PC
The Hub5 is not generally available as it doesn’t support a number of features the Hub4 does.
