If someone was driving from London to Yorkshire, would it be too much out of their way to call in at Nottingham?

I want to ask a friend for a favour, but don't want to put them out too much.

Ahh, I see. My geography is now pretty poor and I don't drive (not allowed to). What other information should I provide?

Depends where in Nottingham (and where they're ultimately heading from and to).


From London to Yorkshire the obvious ways are (ultimately) up the M1 and up the A1. The A1 / A14 / M11 way is much better to/from East London and traffic for West/Central London will probably be better on the M1, obviously in terms of Yorkshire they meet around Leeds and the A1 heads off into North Yorkshire.



Nottingham is (well, areas west of the city centre) quite close to the M1 and the connecting roads are pretty decent so if they're close to a main road and on the west side of the city, if they're already coming up the M1, then it won't be too much of a detour. Using the A1 is a much harder detour as the roads aren't as good and the distance is much further.



So someone heading from like York or the countryside parts of Yorks down the A1 would be put out a lot more than someone going to South or West Yorks who will probably be using the M1.

You could use Google Maps to test out routes and times, using directions rather than "as the crow flies" measurements.

London to Nottingham plus Nottingham to Yorkshire, compared to London to Yorkshire.

The difference in times should give an indication of far out of the way it would be. That would give you the answer without awkwardly(?) asking the question.

If driving to your area, not very much out of the way. Though it does depend whereabouts in Nottingham. I always find it a tedious place to drive through.

London is Covent Garden, Bulwel would be the area in Nottingham and Brighouse would be the area in West Yorkshire.

If you’re driving from London to almost anywhere in Yorkshire you’re going to be going up the M1. Nottingham isn’t a major detour from the M1. With one thing or another it probably adds an hour to the journey.

That'll be no problem at all. Bulwell is less than a mile off the M1, which is the best route from London to Brighouse.

Yorkshire is a big place, so it depends where, Nottingham is also big, so again, it depends where.

M1 Junctions 24, 25 & 26 all serve Nottingham (to an extent, so does J27).

Brighouse in West Yorkshire and Bulwel in Nottingham. Is Bulwel a decent place or is it rough at all (thought you might know from local knowledge)?

Its Bulwell (two L's).

Its a suburb of North West Nottingham, and lets just say its not somewhere I would choose to live. ;)

M1 J26 is the best junction for it.

Brent Cross picking up M1 at Watford, bit more to it than that but that's how I'd go, covent garden Brent Cross, Watford

I suppose being rough or not sort of depends if you're comparing it to Brighouse or a nice part of West Yorkshire ;)
