Western Digital Reds

I thought that WD Red drives were meant to be hard working and designed to be left on 24/7?

I have had 2 x 3TB of them die in the past 2 years both just outside of the warranty they were both in a Synology DS215J NAS.

I thought all Hard Drives are designed to work 24/7, I never turn my desktops off.

Interesting, the site says ;

Quote:

WD Red drives may not be suitable for higher workload environments. For ZFS file systems and overall NAS system compatibility, we highly recommend WD Red Plus drives, which are optimized for higher workloads.
and yet, the next bit seems to [somewhat] contradict this ;

Quote:

Since your NAS system is always on, a reliable drive is essential. With an MTBF of up to 1 million hours, the WD Red drive is engineered to tackle 24x7 environments.
So, take your pick, it seems to be based on "workload".

Th WD Purple are the ones I recommend for things that are constantly on like a NAS or CCTV Network Recorder.

Re: Western Digital Reds

Workload and availability are different things. Reds are fine for a home NAS. I’ve only ever had a single failure in years of 24/7 operation as large archive storage, backup area and file history. Sometimes drives do go. More so when mechanical.
