Unified SSID
Hello all. Lurked and learned a lot here over the years. Could do with some advice regarding benefits or otherwise of a shared SSID across an ASUS airmesh network and repurposed Superhub 2 used as distant wireless acess point. Am nervous would adversely effect airmesh network which is currently working well.
The airmesh works great inside but not so well outside. Has an Ethernet backhaul. Outside have used a redundant SH2 with its Virgin SSID - it connects to ASUS router via powerline adaptors. Not the speediest but allow music streaming outside. Main issue is on returning indoors phones etc often retain Superhub network and have to manually switch to Asus network. Would a single shared SSID cause any problems? Would sharing the same one mean automatic switching to strongest WiFi signal? Reason to ponder this now I shave just been given a pals old SH2 which plan to use at bottom of the garden as a second acess point (powerline connection again to router) - so an opportune time to set up a unified SSID If there are no obvious drawbacks. So anything determental to a unified SSID betwixt ASUS airmesh networks and the two SH2 access points? If so, any pros/cons to shared SSID between the two SH2s?Grateful for the advice from the gurus here. |
Re: Unified SSID
Should not cause any problem at all and ,as you say, phones would switch seamlessly.

Re: Unified SSID
Doubt it would be seamless. A mesh network will support the WiFi roaming standards but a Superhub wont, so handoff would be a bit spotty.

Re: Unified SSID
Thanks both. So some uncertainty. Shared SSID between the repurposed SH2 access points would be ok. Assume that the potential lack of seamless transfer from SH2 connection to airmesh would be evident by slow speeds and require either an off/on WiFi in phone or walking closer to an airmesh node.
Guess suck it and see unless Amy other ideas. Thanks thus far |
Re: Unified SSID
I have a similar system to you, two Asus routers in an aimesh system, with a Shub 3 in modem mode. I just have the one SSID and it works perfectly.
The only issue I've ever had is, very occasionally, the routers "locking up" and not transfering anything to the other one. A quick reboot of both the router and the node solves that. I've got in the habit now, of every couple of weeks or so, rebooting the shub, the router and the node, and now don't ever have any issues at all. |
Re: Unified SSID
Thanks - think will time on my hands at home. Will have a wee play and report back. Thanks again.
