A bit more rain and they will be residing in the resevoir , must be a very nerve racking time for property owners,I hope it all turns out fine for them.

Work to prevent a damaged dam in Derbyshire from bursting is continuing as the Met Office warns of thunderstorms and possible flooding.

For those that are interested here's some of the background on this dam:

Quote:

Quote from New Civil Engineer:The dam construction comprises mainly boulder clay with sands and gravels. There is doubt about the existence of a puddle clay core even though it is shown on the original construction drawings. The dam is founded on fluvio-glacial sand and gravels, glacial till overlying a faulted sequence of mudstones, sandstones and shales of the Millstone Grit Series and Lower Coal Measures
Full report on link above.

Remedial work was done on the dam's internal impervious layer in 1981.

I wonder why they are actively pumping instead of just syphoning?

I must admit it would seem easier. Use a pump to start the syphon and away you go. Keep adding extra pipes and you multiply drainage.

You don't do compassion then, Paul?

Surely compassion only comes into it when life is in danger. This is not the case here and I think you'll find, as usual, the media has blown it out of proportion.

I know, but it is a major event for people driven out of their homes. I would not like to be in that position.
