Re: Obesity 'causes more cases of some cancers than smoking' Perhaps the fear of cancer will be more effective than "fat shaming" to get the lard-asses to shed a few pounds. |

Re: Obesity 'causes more cases of some cancers than smoking' I’m becoming a tad concerned at how readily the phrase “fat shaming” comes into any discussion about clinical obesity recently. While the causes of morbid obesity are a little more complex than people simply eating too much, obesity is now endemic in our population and is becoming a crisis. We have to be able to separate people being genuinely mean about other people’s appearance from important public messages that communicate difficult but important truths about the connection between obesity and disease. |

Re: Obesity 'causes more cases of some cancers than smoking' Nowadays people are provided with too many ready-made excuses. IE I do X because of Y. Eg I(not myself) overeat because my granny died 10 years ago. They never have to accept responsibility for their actions/inactions. I say that as somebody who is very overweight. In my case an orthopaedic consultant said that I couldn't be expected to lose weight until they sorted my knee out, but they won't do that because of my weight. |

Re: Obesity 'causes more cases of some cancers than smoking' There are often stress or depression related triggers for overeating, and the cheapest, easiest to come by snacks on our supermarket shelves are loaded with processed sugar that gives you a massive calorie dose without filling you up (the sugar industry played a blinder, getting everyone focused on fat content ... fat content in food is arguably a far less serious problem because ingesting it makes you feel full). So the deck is indeed stacked against you to an extent. There are push factors to overeating, and when you eat, there are too many foods that readily cause weight gain. Having said all that, you still have to go to a shop, put it in a trolley, take it home and then put it in your mouth... |
