Are we too easily offended? The Grinch ad on the iMax cinema has caused complaints.

An example: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...st-racist.html

The new advert for the Grinch has, on one side of the Imax cinema in Waterloo, the phrase "Welcome to South London. This is your last chance to turn around".

This has had complaints that it is racist. Quite apart from the fact that there isn't one race of South Londoners (London, south of the river, is incredibly diverse, and people from dozens of races live here), the "insult" is clearly meant as a joke. I live in Greater London (about 10 miles south of the river) and I find it mildly amusing, not offensive.

Sadly, there are increasing numbers of incidents that are actually racist, and can involve serious threats, and I think reporting stuff like this actually negatively impacts the victims of those assaults, because it means people are more likely to dismiss them.

Jeez people. Get a blooming sense of humor. Its only a film advertisement and a joke.

People 'claiming' to be offended by such things need to get a grip!

People have always been easy to offend even if what they're offended about has changed. People were offended about what was on television, or computer games, or the lack of respect in society, or music, or films or the content of books. Whichever era you're in there is an example of pearl-clutching moral outrage.

The only real things to get offended about are people who say 'simples' at the end of sentences or think V for Vendetta is a good film.

There are a lot of miserable moaners out there, trying to force their agendas onto the rest of us. All we can do is resist their bleating.

The Brexit thread is a good example of the easily offended. I wish I could say get a life...

The problem actually is, people offended for someone who aren't offended themselves.

These 'complaints' are usually from a minority or even one person but social media amplifies their voice or the media does in search of a clickbait story. The media loves a story life this and as a result far more people get angry someone was outraged than were originally outraged.

From what I seen on this forum I can't stand people that profit from being offended, like they are owed something. An apology isn't good enough it has to have a monetary value.

But you're right, the media picked up on 35 complaints about the Sainsburys 'Plug boy' xmas advert. Saying it would encourage kids to play with plug sockets. They reported that 'dozens' of complaints have been made. Well that's not quite 3 dozen is it. But out of 66.5+ million people in the UK they made 35 people's stupidity newsworthy. But the point is people got annoyed and offended that it made the news instead of just ignoring the story. So the media got what it wanted in the end.

It's worth remembering that the UK probably has the safest electrical plugs in the world. With a decently well made plug and socket, it's almost impossible to electrocute yourself unless you damage the plug or cord. With a less well made plug and socket, it's still hard, but not impossible.

Regarding these sorts of stories, I actually think they do damage to society. Ok, so most people just dismiss it as someone bitching about something minor, but there are people who lump this in with Political correctness with serious examples of abuse.

It's like the Matt Damon thing a few months back. I read what he said, and that was while he accepted things like patting a woman on the bum were bad, and should not be done, they are nowhere near as bad as serious crimes, such as rape, so should not be conflated. The backlash nearly destroyed his career, but he is right. If I were raped (and it is possible, although rare, for men to be raped), I would probably be quite offended to be lumped in with someone who got a pat on the bum, or an inappropriate comment.

Makes me think of an office prank from years ago: There was a rep that left us with some plastic filter films that seemed to smell of sick. Then there was the rubber glue that had gone off. We filled a cardboard folder with the glue and plastic and slipped it inside the double radiator at the chief draughtsman's desk at the end of the office.

Anyway he comes marching in and up to his desk and then promptly back.

The stink was transcendental. Everybody including the "victim" just fell about laughing. That couldn't happen in these snowflake days. :(

HR would have been on the rampage.
