Cold Boot Issue
A friend of mine and i recently built a computer for him and hes having some small issue which seems to be a cold boot issue.
When the computer has been left off for a few hours he presses the power button, the lights come on and the HD light flashes as if its going to windows yet nothing appears on the screen. If he presses the reset button, the computer boots up perfectly and will continue to do so no matter how many times he turns off or restarts until the next time the system is off for a few hours. The only thing i can think of is a bios update to see if it will fix this, the system other than this is rock solid. |
Re: Cold Boot Issue
I have a similar problem after a cold boot. Windows does not identify the LAN, so requires a LAN reset. But any cold boot after that is OK, except when it has been off for an extended period such as overnight.
The problem disappeared after VM did some local network work, but has now reappeared. It doesn't affect the other PC's on the wired network, or any device on the wifi. |

Re: Cold Boot Issue
When in Windows, go to Power Options and turn off Fast Startup.

Re: Cold Boot Issue
I remembered a problem I had on a previous PC, when the clock went bonkers.
So I swapped the CMOS battery for a new one. No problems since. |
Re: Cold Boot Issue
Thanks will have to give these a try.

Re: Cold Boot Issue
Could it be a boot sequence issue ? Maybe if the LAN is before the hard drive then move LAN further down the list.

Re: Cold Boot Issue
Daveeb neither of these, Nothing appears on screen its as if the computer isnt booting yet the hard disk light flashes as if the pc is booting.
If u then press the reset button the pc will reboot with no issue and continue to do so until pc is off overnight again. |

Re: Cold Boot Issue
Which motherboard do you have? My pc has recently started doing something simular where very occasionally i'll press the power button and everything spins up but the pc doesn't post or boot into windows. I've also noticed that when this happens that it doesn't do the usual beep on startup.
I have had this happen before with a previous pc whre it would do this every other time I turned it on, eventually the motherboard failed and had to be replaced. My current motherboard is a Gigabyte Z97-D3H. |
Re: Cold Boot Issue
idi yes and it didnt work.
The motherboard in his PC is the MSI B450-A Pro running Ryzen 2600 and 16GB of Patriot Viper 4 3000Mhz (runs at 2933mhz). |
Re: Cold Boot Issue
When it fails to boot are there any beeps from the motherboard speaker (assuming that one was fitted) or any error LED's light up?
|
Re: Cold Boot Issue
Are you sure the issue isn't the monitor?
|
Re: Cold Boot Issue
no speaker and there are no error LEDs.
If it was the monitor why does it boot perfectly on second boot? |
Re: Cold Boot Issue
Good move no MOBO speaker, it really helps with post error diagnostics.
