Attenuator

I had loss of signal on a tivo box, and on a hunch removed the attenuator, after which signal was ok.

But dodgy picture - lines, lumps, etc.

Is there a knack to fitting attenuators? They seem ‘obvious’ but I want to get it right! Otherwise I’ll buy a new one (easier than phoning Virgin).

Really would get VM to fix it, you're paying them, and they might not like you 'fixing' their equipment. It might be a signal issue and nothing to do with the attenuator.

It's easy to fit an attenuator, but without a signal meter you won't know which type you need - there are lots of them. Call Virgin. They will do some remote checks and send a technician if you need one.

It’s the attenuator that VM fitted a few years ago.

Can they fail?

Very occasionally, but it's far far more likely that something else has failed or drifted out of spec. By taking the attentuator off you were probably just partially compensating for a fault somwhere else.
