Pam Van Damned said the frontman died at home on Wednesday morning and a more detailed statement would follow "in the next few days".

"In the meantime, Pam and Mark's family request privacy at this sad time," the statement said.

Paying tribute, Smith's former bandmate Marc Riley said the singer "taught me a lot about life and he taught me a lot about music".

I looked at his pic and I used to be a DJ many moons ago, never heard of him either.

He was post-punk, released 32 albums - niche market, but popular in Manchester and Leeds.

It wasn’t the type of music that got played in discos...

I was only listening to Eat Y'Self Fitter earlier today. Saw them live best part of 30 years ago and always planned to see them again. Upsetting news, he'll be missed in this house.

l remember him well from my early days as a DJ as its just very sad to hear of his early passing.:(
