St Petersburg metro explosions kill ten
Several explosions in multiple St Petersburg stations have killed 10 people and injured at least 50 so far.
No dive into terrorism yet but it seems rather likely. Images of mangled trains are circulating http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-39481770 Title can be amended when it's confirmed as a terrorist incident. This is an ongoing incident, expect fluctuations in the numbers but hopefully no further attacks. I'd assume absolutely all form of metro travel has been suspended in major cities. ---------- Post added at 14:18 ---------- Previous post was at 14:13 ---------- Update: Definitely a terrorist attack, just needs confirmed if foreign or domestic, one unexploded device was recovered. 2 bombs exploded from a planned 3 over 2 seperate stations, unaware if the third was in a third station or with one of the others ---------- Post added at 14:39 ---------- Previous post was at 14:18 ---------- 'Moscow Metro and Aeroports are now on hightened alert state' Quote:

I'd guess chechen rebels working with some isis finance although given how repressive the putin regime is becoming could just as easily be an internal attack.

Terrible news - I feel sorry for the victims, and their friends and families, and the Russian people.

Regardless of race, religion or creed, the people who do this have one thing in common. They're **** and those who suffer at their hands are almost always just ordinary, innocent people going about their daily lives.

Fact clear up.
There was only one explosion, the reason for the two explosion report was due to the train being in transit between two stations, Sennaya Ploshchad and Tekhnologichesky Institut. The train coming to a halt at the latter. A second device was found before explosion thankfully at another station. The death toll has also risen to 11 with 45 injured. Terrorism is the enemy of everyone. I've got to question people and station officials though. Here is a picture of the unattended bag that was thought to contain an IED. https://i.imgur.com/5UBRaXo.jpg There's still a woman visible and the person taking the picture so one could assume there are more people just lurking about in a station thought to contain a bomb. Just 'thought' to contain a bomb after what had just happened should have seen these folks out that front door asap. Here is what was found in the bag: https://pp.userapi.com/c638823/v6388...a7OY888PbQ.jpg A TNT pipe bomb with ball bearings strapped to it (Removed in the picture and seated under the lid) Two suspects have been ID'd but they're not releasing any information (Internet has a hold of a suspected picture though) |

This is apparently a picture of the second, defused bomb. Awful.

Are those ball bearings? :sick::sick:

Looks that way...

Re: St Petersburg metro explosions kill ten
It's a standard 1kg TNT IED, radius of 25m that's vastly increased by the ball bearings, it's horrible that I've had to say standard but this is now the common device used with ball bearings or even nails when explosive terrorism occurs. It's been made by emptying a mortar shell, leaving you with the 1kg. It's bodged into a sawn up fire extinguisher. At 25m without those ball bearings it can be a fatal device but it's not a mass casualty situation, the addition of those is beyond crude and disgusting, it easily doubled the casualties, I can't give exact specifics but it's akin to a shotgun firing off 20 rounds in a 360 circle simultaneously except with far great power, easily shredding both carriage and anyone in it's path. All in all, you've got a decent sized pipe bomb with shrapnel attached.
The image we both linked are of the same bomb, again the issue is these were taken in full open view of the public who had yet to be evacuated, the response was quite shocking given our own services closed off Westminster for an unexploded bomb in the Thames upon my visit in January. We've seen similar devices in the Boston bombings and the NY state chelsea explosion, pressure cooker nailbombs. Disgusting creatures. |
