Supermarket customers complain about 'green' Christmas Day turkeys

http://www.itv.com/news/2016-12-28/s...s-day-turkeys/

Reading this article made me think of four years ago. When we bought a Turkey from ASDA.

Same thing happened to us on Xmas Day, when we started to cook our Turkey. We opened the turkey, and a horrible smell came from it. The wife started to clean the turkey, and green stuff came from inside.

It was obvious the turkey was unfit to eat. Took it back day after Boxing Day, and ASDA didn't give a stuff about our misfortune. Blamed the supplier about it. Even the manager wouldn't speak to us.

I've had the same with ASDA chicken breasts. Well in date but obviously rotting when opened. I suspect that they were left outside too long after being offloaded from the refrigerated lorry.

This is Green muscle desease and not the result of poor storage or handling of the carcase.

Green Muscle Disease is a hidden problem in today’s large broiler chickens that is not detected until these birds are deboned at the processing plant. It is characterised by necrosis and atrophy of the deep pectoral muscle, which is commonly referred to as the breast tender (Bilgili and Hess, 2008). Green Muscle Disease is not a new disease, but it is becoming increasingly more common in meat-type broiler chickens selected for high breast meat yield.

So have l. BUT, l watched a doc several years ago concerned infected chicken.

Apparently, if infected chicken is spotted at farms. The health inspectors at the farm, spray a colour on that chicken so it has to be destroyed.
However, so suspicious farm have a way round this. And still sell to the food chain of what we eat.

Cannot think of the programme, but l was glued to what goes on with animals, before it hits the food chain.

Me too thanks heero_yuy :). It's like the old days when contributors shared interesting information on CF before we all got bogged down in that EU thing.
