2016 has been the worst year for Showbiz / Music industry. R.I.P Jimmy.

Yes, it's been a shocking year for this.

Ditto that, if it made fun of anyone it was the British but hey ho...

Indeed Osem but as Hugh says times have changed but what does surprise me is Rising Damp is still shown on ITV quite regularly and yet there is much in that that certainly is not PC IMO.

Times certainly have changed when it's deemed necessary to 'ban' and TV series which made fun of the white British establishment... :spin:

I'm not sure it's ever been banned. As Hugh notes, it's available on the BBC store. I suspect it's not shown for the same reason Are You Being Served is not shown. Not so much because of offensive content, more that they are unsure how many viewers it would get. They keep showing Dad's Army because they *know* it'll get a lot of viewers.

That said, I think a lot of people who complain about these "racist" TV shows don't necessarily fully understand what they complain about. Take the various Alf Garnett shows. Various people have complained that those shows are massively racist and the character is. However, as the show's creator Johnny Speight apparently asked in an interview, who is the one person who loses out most as a result of all Alf Garnett's actions and schemes? Alf himself. The show is not so much about criticising various cultures and races of people, more about showing the racist himself being stupid.

Some comment from Jimmy Perry on this topic back from 2003.

Quote:

Why do you think the sitcom is regarded as racist? "Because of ignorance. It's not the British Asians who call the show racist. They called - and still call it - 'our programme'. It was BBC executives who'd never been to India who thought it was racist." In his autobiography, Perry says that he and Croft were trying to explain why so many Asians were living in the UK and how we became a multiracial society. "I think as regards racism it's marvellous," he says.
