and removal of stm. Atm on the tier we are on you have got stm in effect weekeday evenings and all weekend which knocks me down from 1.4MB/sec to 500k exactly. On 200mbits games you are 20mbits up with no traffic management in effect. That doesn't mean you are going to get 20mbits up all the time though because you are not immune to congestion. As an example, I don't even need to worry about hitting the thresholds for stm to kick in because I can only get 300k/sec up.

I get a rock steady 20M upload all the time (in fact, almost 21M).

Then again, the network in this area has always been good (installed originally by Diamond Cable in the late 1990's).

If you're experiencing upstream congestion to the point where you can only get 300k upstream your service must be horrible.

I meant kilobytes per second, not kilobits. It is pretty normal for a Saturday evening for me, there have been other times though when I have got full speed.

I got that, but it would still feel horrendous in usage unless there's QoS in place, or the home router is doing something and the speeds are due to heavy usage at the home. DOCSIS does not handle upstream congestion gracefully.

maybe, somebody is always streaming content from the NAS but I set that up so the TV's, nas and switches are all on the same network segment and somebody is always playing l4d over the internet but it shouldn't kill the connection that much. It isn't a problem, it only happens for a couple of hours on a Saturday evening and the rest of the time my connection is mint.

That is weird - Saturdays are not a heavy day for usage. I'll make some enquiries.

Going from 200mb to 200mb gamer - the download is slightly faster too (by about 10mb)

thanks, to be fair Saturday evenings are always pants for a few hours between 1700-2000 and then it goes back to normal. Youtube was nearly usable last night. If you want my postcode or anything to see where I am let me know.

Not sure why the additional upload speed is tagged as "gamer". Gaming is all about low latency and low packet loss. As long as you have "enough" upload bandwidth, having more will not improve your gaming experience.

Its more to do with the streaming gamer that wants to use Twitch or Youtube whilst gaming.
