No point. 2ac is the best hub

If you're going to stick it on modem mode, there's literally no advantage to using the SH3.

Just to point out that if you want to go for the VIVID 200 Gamer with the increased upload, or HomeWorks + up to 300Mbps at any stage, then you'll need the Hub 3.0.

Interesting.

VM have sent me a SHUB3 (for free! - Yay!) which I haven't yet set up. This is to replace my old modem (which looks very much like the ambit 256). My PC is currently linked to this via ethernet and the modem get's it's mojo directly from the coax from the wall.

I'm not fussed about wi-fi etc. so can assume that, when I set up the new SHUB, modem mode would be my best bet? All I need is that internet connection and for it to be as stable as possible.

Cheers.

So you don't have a router at present? If not I'd personally suggest leaving the Hub 3.0 in router mode.

Unless you need to do it for a specific reason, having a computer directly exposed to the internet is a security risk.

The Hub 3.0 is router mode protects your computer from hacking attempts.

Except when they force you to upgrade of course.

It also "Hog ties" you to VM's totally inadequate router options (as far as advanced users and gamers are concerned). One size does not fit all!

All I'm was saying is don't run the Hub 3.0 in modem mode and then directly connect a computer to it - which is what flatley seemed to saying they were thinking of doing.

So "modem mode" doesn't mean "act like a modem"? My current setup is sans router and has been connected that way since dinosaurs ruled. I am, I think, misunderstanding what "modem mode" actually does.

Re: Superhub 3

The Hub 3.0 always acts as a modem. What 'modem mode' does it turn off the router functions, which for you are an addition to how you currently run your equipment.

When the internet first came about, it was not unreasonable to have the connection directly into the computer.

However in 2016, it's not such a good idea as it can expose your computer to security risks. By using the Hub 3.0 in router mode, you can reduce these risk significantly by the simple fact that you are behind a router - your computer is masked from being visible to those that might want to try and gain access without your permission.

As said, the Hub 3.0 router options don't suit everyone. But if you don't currently have a router, there is no reason to put the Hub 3.0 into modem mode. Just connect your computer to any of the Ethernet ports and should work just as it did before.

Just to add my few cents worth; IMHO, the HUb 3 is a waste of time!!
SIX months ago I reported a number of issues that I have with the bloody thing, but STILL they persist!
Things like a plain text password field (thats AFTER a full 5-9 second wait to be able to click the damn input field), whenever I try to setup fixed local IP's, the page says loading then takes me back to the login screen, to which I cannot login again as it reports that a user is already logged in, so have to power cycle the wretched device, and if I'm lucky there's a 45% chance of success without ANOTHER power cycle!
Oh yeah and there's the fact that VM CANNOT provide me with a PREMIUM service of 300Mb/s 98% of the day (yet again using the years old excuse of "oh its something wrong with YOUR PC" when I know damn well my equipment is more than able of 300Mb!)

ALSO when on Homeworks, the broadband option is no longer available when calling for tech support, have to select the TV problems to get through!

Anyways rant over, I'm sure that there are people that lov e the new hubs, but for me, I'd rather the Shub2 AC!

If your old modem really did look like this, then putting the SH3 into modem mode will give you the exact same result you have to do. The old ambits were "just" a modem with no routing functionality.

The suggestion here is to make use of the SH3's router mode because having A router is better than having no router - you get a firewall, you get free Wireless, you get to plug in more than one device. The SH3 serves as a very basic router.

Thanks all. That's clear.

Most of them issues are getting addressed as far as I'm aware in beta test forums atm
