When l read articles such as this. It makes me weep.

When l went to the USA several years ago. The most important thing we arranged, was the Insurance Policy.

This is where Companies rip you off. CHECK DETAILS THOROUGHLY

Whilst I feel sorry for his family, the article states he only took out the insurance the day he got sick. You take insurance out before you need it, not when....

He was already sick when he arranged the insurance. If he had done it before going on holiday, he probably would have been ok. It's a bit like insuring your household contents just after you've just been burgled. I doubt any insurance company on the planet would cover that.

Missed a key detail before getting yourself worked up Arthur you need to calm down or your going to burst a blood vessel or worse and then your family will be unhappy.

They'll be OK, they'll just take out medical insurance if anything untoward happens... ;)

So everyone is right about the insurance here but what I am wondering is why the British Government didn't step in to get him home?

It's not clear if the inability to get him home harmed his chances of recovery but if it was the case, and I am not sure if it is, then I would say that should be the focus of the story.

I thought the nhs resolved big bills for british citizens abroad anyway sure I've seen before that the nhs sorted things out for someone.

He was sent to a private hospital, not a state hospital - I believe the repricocity is only between State hospitals.

I agree that the human cost should be the focus, but if our Government bails him out, what incentive is their for anyone to take out adequate travel insurance?

Having said that, we do actually pay for a lot of foreigners to come here and get free NHS care that they are not entitled to.

AIUI any treatment given in another EU country is paid for by the home country, in our case the NHS.

That's as I understand it too.
