VM keep losing tv customers but are showing real growth in their broadband numbers. Perhaps VM might start doing what their counterparts are starting to do in the States and offer "free" tv with their broadband packages.

If VM offered a broadband tier faster than FTTC and marketed it with "free" tv, it could raise their tv numbers which at the moment is still in terminal decline.

BT have gone from zero to a million+ tv customers in a few years...

I get the feeling Virgin's TV plans are going to switch to offering a more premium service.

Let's face it, Virgin's TV offering has always lagged behind Sky's both in terms of content and functionality. They have ample bandwidth to do something about that, though.

.... but they'll never really be a "premium" player unless they bid for football and film rights, which they've said they won't do.

Having four brand new exclusive dramas is great, but that's over a two year period and they can't call that premium.

The one thing they can do that the others mostly can't, is on broadband speed. They've said they're bumping the 200mb to 300mb soon with a price rise thrown in for good measure. And when DOCSIS3.1 comes, that'll go up to 1gb.

That's exactly it, their advantage is in the sheer bandwidth they have available. That's what I am talking about when I say "premium" service. Capitalise on the way our viewing habits are shifting away from broadcast TV to consuming on-demand. Sky couldn't keep up with that the way Virgin can.

But as a former cableco boss said years ago, the danger is that VM just become the "pipe" for everyone else's stuff. Their new stb and software needs to be at least as good as Sky's to keep in the tv game.

I said when selling there TV side that was a mistake. Content is king. They have two options for the TV business go premium or go cheap. The half way house they doing at the moment isnt working. Cheap option is do what someone else said just offer the TV free on top of broadband make the difference in volume. Other options go premium less customers but more willing to pay the bigger bucks. They could go buying content, make a radically different box (pure streaming, unlimited "storage" for catchup, everything on demand) sort of thing. TV viewing is changing and my family dont watch live tv bar sport or Im a celeb etc.

I don't disagree that the new box needs to bring it's A-game, but there's also nothing wrong with "just" being a pipe for everyone else's stuff. Virgin could theoretically do a deal with the big ondemand content providers (Netflix, Amazon, etc.) and pipe their content onto Virgin Boxes. Most people are happy to pay like £8 a month for netflix, what if you could pay £15 a month for all of the ondemand services and have all that content available on a TiVo like interface? It would take some doing and a lot of negotiation, but it'd be a hell of a service to beat.

Exactly, viewing habits are changing. People are looking to binge watch more and more and less willing to channel hop.

And not having any content of their own hasn't really been that much of a problem. They have a much better relationship with Sky than they ever had (well Atlantic excluded, but that's another story) and I doubt BT would have agreed such a a favourable deal on BT Sports had Virgin been in the content acquisition game.

Just my two pence :)

I wish we could have all the streaming content through one lot of menus as VOD used to be on cable when it started. But we're in the world of apps and some seem to think its "progress" accessing all different apps for content rather than going through one interface.

Lets see what they do with their box but as I've said on other threads I'm not sure that the new box will be a PVR and may well be a pure streaming box only.

As for premium content, Sky own the footie and film rights, but there's nothing stopping VM/Liberty putting money into other things like Netflix has done. Four dramas over two years ain't enough.
