Super hub 2 and T Link WR940N
 

Hi - I am getting confused about the best way to setup my config of a Superhub2 and T Link WR940N router.

I currently have the Virgin hub setup as a modem with the wireless router working fine. I have 3 LAN cables hooked into the router too for the TV, Blueray, Sky box etc. All works fine except the kit is all located in the corner of my house, surrounded by other electrical devices etc and the wireless signal I get upstairs in the house is very poor.

So - I would like to move the router into the middle of the house so everywhere gets a better signal. However - I have the 3 LAN cables to deal with (I can't plug into the virgin box when it's in modem only mode) and don't want cables running through my house.

What options do I have here? I could move the modem and router to middle of the house except the virgin connections come in where the boxes are now.

Or - can keep the modem where it is, accept I need to find a different solution to the 3 Lan cable problem - and then use some sort of plug in power Ethernet extender to relocate the router?

Any hints and tips welcomed, sorry if I haven't made myself clear in the above!

One solution would be to use the SH2 as a router, with the lan cables attached and in its original position. You could have wifi on or off. But also use a pair of powerline adapters so that you connect one lan cable from the SH2 to the powerline, and on the other end (upstairs?) connect from the powerline to your other router. Turn DHCP off on that and give it a fixed IP address on the SH2 and it will effectively be a separate router but on the same network as the SH2. Devices that attach through that router will be given addresses by the SH2.

Thanks that sounds like a good option. I assume something like these would do the job in terms of Powerlines?

I'm doing a similar thing, the SH2 is connected to nearby stuff via cable and has wireless running for downstairs. There is also a cable to the other end of the house upstairs where I've put a D-Link DIR 655 used as an access point. You plug the cable into one of the LAN ports on the other router. The D-Link is assigned a fixed address of 192.168.0.200 so I can log in to the admin pages, and DHCP is turned off. To do the initial setup you'll need to connect directly with a cable and a laptop or PC so you can make those changes, then once connected by cable or powerline everything looks like one network.

Thanks. I will experiment with where I put the d link router to give best signal across the house. I have ordered the newer pair of Powerline adopters as you suggested and will let you know how I get on. I think I will start with just hooking it all up by Ethernet cable then build up the wifi then finally the Powerlines. I will let you know how I get on.

So I have everything working except I cannot assign a fixed IP address to my D Link router. Do I do this from the admin screen of the virgin superhub or the d link router? I can turn off DHCP - but not sure what to enter for static IP under IP address, subnet mask, default gateway etc

The WR940n is a TP-Link...
Strangely, I had a spare TP-Link Archer D2 the other day, so I thought I'd see whether it was worth changing to that one as my 'extra' access point. Compared to the D-Link DIR-655 I'm currently using I did find it a little fiddly to set up. This may help: http://www.tp-link.com/en/faq-417.html

OK I will try that then ... but I also need to put in DNS settings - what do I put there? Just the IP of the superhub? Currently my internet is down - since about midday when we had a massive storm - as soon as it's back up I will try. Thanks for your help!
