SOLVED - SSID broadcast "To be or not to be?"
Evening all.
Disabling SSID Broadcasting on VM Super Hub (model 1, the hub on the little stand) I am aware that un-checking the option to Enable SSID Broadcast and setting it to disable broadcast has no real security improvement. However, I have in the past chosen this option (go figure, I like to be private). The SSID name and Passphrase were not the default. After connecting my phone and tablet to the router I disabled the SSID broadcast and my phone and tablet could still see the router and stay connected. It has been like this for two years. My PC is connected by Ethernet cable. I have recently changed my SSID name. I reconnected my phone and tablet successfully using the new SSID name. My problem: When I disable the SSID broadcast my phone and tablet no longer see (and connect) to the router. As soon as I re-enable the SSID broadcast my phone and tablet immediately connect. Sorry to be so long winded but I just wanted to explain that I have not forgotten anything obvious. Now, with respect to the nice chaps who will want to tell me not to bother as it will not give me any security improvement. My point is that for some reason I did have this option but it no longer seems to work. Oldie. |
Re: SSID broadcast "To be or not to be?"
Get your phone and tablet to forget the previous SSID then start again. They are still trying to connect to the previous (hidden) SSID

Re: SSID broadcast "To be or not to be?"
Disabling the SSID is pointless nowadays as mobile apps can find them.
The best thing is good encryption, and passwords. I had a similar issue, but even if you can't find a hidden SSID, provided you enter the correct details, I thought any device would be able to connect to it? |

SOLVED Re: SSID broadcast "To be or not to be?"
Pip and Hom3r. Thank you both for your replies.
Yes you are both right. I did select forget SSID but I missed the option to connect to an SSID not shown in the re-scanned lists on both phone and tablet. I am a bit thick. Many thanks to you both. Oldie. |
Re: SSID broadcast "To be or not to be?"
You're welcome. as long as you got it sorted.

Re: SSID broadcast "To be or not to be?"
I tried this the other day when my BT hub wouldn't pick up the 5G on my iphone. I was amazed it worked but it did - so Pip's advice is good
