Awful upload speed

My ADSL typically delivers a sync speed of 2.25 Mbps down and 440 Kbps up. However since January the download sync has improved dramatically so it now stands at 4.219 Mbps down, while the upload has collapsed to just 160 Kbps.

Is there likely to be a connection or is it a coincidence?

On balance, if it's a case of one or the other, I'd prefer to keep the download speed, which is substantially better than it ever has been on our long line. But I don't mind giving India a call if my upload can be improved without wrecking the download.

A whole 4.2 Mbps download plenty to go around.:D

From what I understand upload on a plain ADSL line (rather than ADSL2) should always sync at 448 unless there's a problem on the line.

If your router allows you to, could you post up the ADSL line stats (line attenuation, noise margin and the like)?

Another thing to check is the BT Wholesale speed test (http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/). Go through to "further diagnostics" and enter the phone line number, and note what the IP profile for the line is after the test runs.

Sadly the BT Homehub v4 doesn't grant access to any line stats except for the down/up sync speed.

Given my speed tests are consistently around 3.4Mb down I'm fairly sure the IP profile is set at 3.5Mb.

However, it seems to have settled itself now and the upload is synced at 448.

It's been difficult to get a good idea what my actual upload speed has been since Christmas, because I started using Google Drive and the computer in the living room spent almost 3 months slowly uploading 13 years worth of digital photos. :D

I think the HH should offer stats under the advanced menu (the HH3 did), though I've never played with an HH4.

Cloud storage over ADSL is always fun. Especially when you're stuck sharing said ADSL across an office.

Nope ... It's a known frustration of the HH4. I used to access the stats in my HH3 regularly, as we have a long pole mounted line and have problems with it fairly frequently. Not being able to do so with the HH4 is a faff.

You can sometimes pick up some useful information about noise margin and attenuation in the logs, if you look at them immediately after the hub has dropped and reconnected. It lists all the numbers after re-establishing the connection. But if you don't catch it then, it gets buried under pages of other stuff.

The download sync increase may have been due to a move to 21CN and ADSL2+.

Shouldn't have affected upload, if anything should've improved it.

The two, upstream and downstream, can't borrow bandwidth from one another in both directions; upstream can borrow from downstream if configured that way, ADSL 2+ Annex M, but not vice-versa.

No, I thought that ought to be the case.

The upload has returned to where it has always been, 448kb. A further improvement would be nice, but for now I'm just thankful the download has improved. We now have up to eight devices connected wirelessly, not including guests in the B&B, with 3 or 4 of them in use at the same time in an average evening. It's getting congested ... :disturbd:
