Phone Line Rental

Quote:

Phone companies could be banned from charging for landlines under proposals unveiled by Ed Vaizey, the Culture Minister.
Quote:

Mr Vaizey has written to BT, Virgin, Sky and TalkTalk to call for urgent talks.

However he conceded it could mean the price of broadband packages goes up overall.

Re: Phone Line Rental

As all broadband suppliers charge for line rental whether you use a landline phone or not it will make no difference to the price of broadband. The line rental cost would just become absorbed into the broadband cost.

?? VM don't charge for Phone Line Rental if you don't have a contract with them for one lol

Broadband only connection here and that's all i pay for ..

I've said for years virgin should charge £0 for line rental and make the broadband more expensive. Many people resent paying for line rental since virgin doesn't need a landline for broadband

"Line rental" will just be renamed as a standing charge or service charge, as that's what it is.

So you are paying for it and more for not having it.
Exafter the point I was making.

They give you a reduction on the cost of your broadband if you take a landline with them.. that's a different thing.. the standalone broadband is a set cost. it only reduces because they give you a bundle deal if you take multiple services.

standalone broadband is exactly what it is. a standalone product.

the cost does not increase because i don't take a landline. they give you a reduction on the set cost of standalone broadband if you take multiple services

so it is 100% possible to have a broadband only connection with VM.

you lot can argue with each other all day long to try and make yourself feel better for getting ripped off by paying over the odds for line rental..i am free from all that nonsense :)

I've been told that the discount for taking a phone line exceeds the cost of the line rental.

If this is true, you would be better off taking the phone service, even if a phone is never ever plugged in!

The minimum phone package includes free calls at the weekend, so it might come in useful for that alone :D

Yes if i took a phone line my broadband would be £1.99 a mnth cheaper because of the bundle discount.but i have no interest/need in a phone line so i don't have one.. its kinda straight forward lol

Except you do, it's just not connected. VM use Siamese cabling to your home.

Kinda straight forward though. You're happy to pay £1.99 more per month for not having something you won't use which is already there but not terminated.

Economics 101.

Not in all areas. Virgin are now doing FTTP installs now.

Re: Phone Line Rental

As this is not something specific to Virgin Media (it applies to all ISPs/Phone providers), I've moved it to the Internet forum.

---------- Post added at 13:48 ---------- Previous post was at 13:26 ----------

I think this is good, in theory. In practice, the Telecoms providers are going to do their utmost to cover the cost of any losses. That will probably mean raising other prices. In the case of Virgin, they actually charge less for broadband if you take a phone line, so at best, Virgin customers pay what they do now.

Re: Phone Line Rental

What if you take BB and TV (no phone) from Virgin? Is there any sort of discount?
