OpenVPN config. Asus RT-AC87U (SH3 in modem mode)
 

Have we any OpenVPN experts out there?

I have set up my own OpenVPN server on the router.
Done the usual - set up openvpn config file using the routers export openvpn config file.
Set up my DDNS.
When connecting my Mac to the OpenVPN server on my home network everything works ok.
When trying to connect from a public network it will not connect.
The only thing I managed to connect from outside my home network was my iPhone over 4G using the OpenVPN app.
I presume it's a VPN subnet netmask conflict somewhere when trying to connect from outside my home network.
Tried lots of searches on google but although I am reasonably au-fait with some aspects of the router settings I was unable to find an answer to my issue.
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried more than one public network? There's a chance that they've blocked VPN access, or more specifically they've blocked whatever ports your VPN is listening on.

I will try another public network.
Also going to try it on my brother in laws home network across the road.

In order to get my own OpenVPN setup to work reliably over multiple public and corporate networks (who do have a habit of blocking ports) I changed the config to listen on TCP port 443. Of course this may give you a problem if you're also running an https web server but in this case you can 'port-share' option in your OpenVPN config so that it pushes the https traffic to another port that you've configured your web server to listen on.
