Weird modem behaviour

Modem is a virgin ambit model E08co.13.00. Installed 2008.

Got a continuous fast pulse on the send light of my modem even when the computer (a Mac) is shut down. (Only ready/synch and power should be on). Enet light also fast pulsing when computer is on. Fault may have been triggered by problems in my area on Friday 11th. Noticed problem about noon when found I was off-line but synch and ready lights were solid—rebooted all, and back on line. Tried numerous restarts to remove problem, but send light pulses as soon as modem power is on. Tried modem restart with Enet cable temp :(disconnected—no joy.
Am on line, no probs with email/net but am now worried I now have a flaky modem. Plan to ring 150 for advice unless fix suggested here.
Thanks aygoman

Wow you still have an ambit??

You might be better calling and getting it replaced with a Superhub.

The Ambit is a museum piece now.

Phone and get it replaced with a super hub now

To be honest, I'm surprised CS didn't send you a Superhub when they upgraded you

The light is flashing because ARP requests are being sent to it from the CMTS (modem at VM's end).

Before you ask:
- This will not affect your connection at all.
- It is not a security risk.
- No it cannot be changed back.
- If you don't understand what ARP packets are, you don't need to understand. Ignore it.
- Yes, the LED is now useless to detect traffic.

The CMTS configuration has changed. So not a fault.

Most likely a new CMTS.

You can't change it. The change is at Virgin's end.

Thanks aygoman

You don't have a flakey modem. Changing your modem won't help.
If you ring 150 they probably won't understand and will give you some BS to get you off the line, or they will say it is supposed to flash.

thanks MUD Wizard. guess i might be not alone in this. 150 prob uber busy with other worriers. might try for a superhub tho as suggested. museum piece modem a bit worrying too

Re: Weird modem behaviour

Not only that, but the ambit will only do 20Mbit at the most. If you get a Superhub, you'll get a minimum of 50Mbit.
