Power Levels
 

Hi all

I just upgraded to the Superhub 2ac with 200mbps speed however my power levels seem odd.

With a 10 dB attenuator my downstream levels are -5 to -7 and without it they are +7.3.

Is that bad? It seems like my net isn't so consistent.

yes it is, you want them to be bang in middle (i.e. around 0). I wouldn't want mine at either -7 or +7. You can either ring VM and ask them to send a tech out with a new fpa for something like 3db or you could just save yourself the hassle and buy one yourself. This would be perfect.

I rang them and the guy I spoke to said they're okay which I thought was odd. I might buy that! Cheers.

Now I am getting 4mbps! Loads of T3 Timeouts! So angry.

Upstream levels are 51.46. Is that high?

Okay, what should they be? I have an engineer booked for Monday so hopefully they will fix the issue.

What really is annoying as the speed was fine two days ago so how can this all of a sudden happen?

in the mid 40's is ideal for upstream...

If your upstream and/or downstream levels are marginal then only a small change in the local noise environment can cause this. Same reason that a small loss of signal or reduction in signal to noise will cause extreme pixelation in a DTV broadcast if the signal is on the limit.

-7 dBmV is out of range. It can cause reliability problems.
+7 dBmV is in range. That would work fine.

I have my downstream levels around +7 to +9 dBmV during summer.

The acceptable range for downstream is generally -6 to +10 dBmV. Anywhere inside that is fine (doesn't need to be zero and won't benefit any more from being zero than being +7 dBmV), but if you allow for drifting levels then you don't want it right on the edge of the range.

You should expect your levels to change by about 3 dBmV between winter and summer.

Yes. You want it in the 40's, though high 30's is also fine. Higher downstream helps reduce the upstream. Though the modem keeps increasing the power until it gets a signal through, so depends on whether the issue is just the low downstream level or something else.

The "engineer" will probably just take the attenuator off.

The engineer should go to the cab or fit an HDU to decrease the upstream... and then adjust the downstream accordingly...

Could even be a bad connector or splitter some where

One thing to remember with the attenuators... Wideband does up and down (white one)... Forward path only does down (purple one) ;)

I've taken the attenuator off. Current levels are downstream 8.3 and upstream 41.

Getting better speeds but no where near 200. Max around 50.
