External IP Address Problems
Just transferred to Virgin Media from TalkTalk, mainly to get better download speeds. I'm on the 100 Mbps with their new Hub 3 router. Big problem is my music server can no longer access the Gracenote database with messages of "bad response from server", "bad connection", "cannot connect to ..." and "failure to identify external IP address". Virgin say its not their problem and want me to join a £5/month subscription service to get it fixed. I suspect its a problem with the security settings on the router. Has anyone had this sort of problem before? Is there a known fix? Thanks everyone!

Re: External IP Address Problems
It maybe a Hub3 problem as the firmware still has issues, if i was you i would make a detailed post of your issue on the VM forum making sure they know it is a Hub 3, i am sure future firmware updates will fix the issues people are having.
Upnp doesn't currently work on the Hub3 so if it needs that then that is your problem, i myself am not really knowledgeable in these details but others on the VM forum will be. If you have a router then drop it into modem mode until the issues get fixed. |
Re: External IP Address Problems
I had the same problem with my Plex media server, as above I only found out it's a known issue by complaining that UPnP doesn't work on the SH3 so you need to forward any ports like that manually.
Hopefully there'll be a firmware update coming soon to fix this, but as we don't have access to the trialist forum, we have no way of knowing. |
Re: External IP Address Problems
Reports are that a new firmware is due this month, no idea as to what it fixes

Don't suppose any of the trialists would be able to post the list of known issues? Can't see why VM would want to keep that private to only trialists. |

Thanks everyone for the prompt responses. Taking SnoopZ's suggestion, here are the full details of the problem: The music server is attached to the network by ethernet. It is trying to access the Gracenote database for CD information, something it used to do happily before the change to Virgin. The machine has an Ethernet connection test facility which states exactly what's going on during the test. The messages I have been getting are in the attached pdf. I'm sure aficionados will find it fascinating tea time sport. I am glean only basics and just hope the problem can go away soon! Again, thanks everyone.

Re: External IP Address Problems
it looks like it is a port forwarding issue and you need to forward the blocked ports to the internal ip address of your music server which is 192.168.0.14. As you can see, the secure http ports of 443 and 8080 are open and ok.

Re: External IP Address Problems
If you need to forward ports on the SH3 then leave the firewall on as turning it off disables the port forward
|
Re: External IP Address Problems
Thank you, General. Seems that way. Been trying to open those ports but even with the help desk talking me through it step by step, the ports stay stubbornly closed. Looking at the possibility of getting a third party router.

Re: External IP Address Problems
IMO i would get Virgin to replace it with a SuperHub2ac... Good piece of kit again IMO

Remember the Hub3 does 16 downstreams and the SH2ac can't. |
Re: External IP Address Problems
yup, it is a shame they have taken a step backwards. Shub1 was an absolute joke and it took them two years to get it working reasonably well, shub2 was great and now they have done half a job on shub3 (in conjunction with a laughable speed upgrade schedule). You can tell Neil Berkett has left.

Mines stable apart from the knackered firmware, i mean it doesn't reboot or anything and i just ignore what the TBB graph looks like when on 16 channels.
