Unable to share a drive

For some reason on one of my PCs it refuses to share over the network.

Its set as a network drive and all permissions set but when i attempt to access it from another PC it says i dont have permissions to access. Anyone help as its driving me nuts.

Thanks

Re: Unable to share a drive

I gave up trying to share PC to PC HDDs, to be honest the simplest thing to do is get a NAS drive connect it to you router, and then PCs, Tablets Phones, other devices can connect.

Re: Unable to share a drive

I have a NAS but i wanted to save the time of copying from a drive to the NAS each time i work on it.

Re: Unable to share a drive

No need to copy, just open the file on the NAS, I do.

No need to copy to local drive.

If any of the PCs is running Windows 7, 8 or 10 ,I find that although it is supposed to help with networking, I find that Windows Homegroup just gets in the way. Try leaving any home groups..

Re: Unable to share a drive

Alan, it's worth trying reshaping networks on you PCs, that sometimes does the trick

Re: Unable to share a drive

can you browse to the folders via C$ or "depending on the drive letter" $

that should get you in as well

Re: Unable to share a drive

so you can't even connect to it via \"ip address" of machine"drive letter"$

you sure you have the right ip address for the machine?

Re: Unable to share a drive

to make clearer;

note the name of the machine that holds the share, either by name or IP Address

To find computer name;
  1. open a command prompt
  2. type echo %computername%
  3. press return
  4. the result will be the computer name

To find IP address;
  1. open a command prompt
  2. type ipconfig
  3. press return
  4. make note of the address under your network adaptor listed as IPv4 address

Try accessing the share from the remote machine;
On the remote machine open a Windows Explorer window (the yellow folder icon)
in the address bar, type \\IPaddressORComputerName\c$ so it would look like:
\\192.168.0.10\c$
or
\\RemoteComputerName\c$
This should prompt you for a username and password. Type a username and password for an account on the remote machine. You may need to precede the username with .\. For example:
.\username
You can replace c$ with d$, e$ of whatever drive letter the sharing machine sees the drive as.
You should then be able to navigate to your folder.

When mapping the drive, select the option to connect using different credentials. Enter in an account for the machine you are trying to connect to. You will need to enter the username as '.\username' otherwise it will try to authenticate the account as one on the local machine, not the remote one.
