Couple waste £50,000 and refused benefits, say Christmas was ruined.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-benefits.html

Won £50,000 in 2014 on the Channel Islands Lotto, squandered it all on designer clothes and a 50 inch TV. Unable to afford rent so were evicted in December, and the woman had the nerve to say after being refused Income Support and housing benefit that her Christmas was ruined.

Now they are facing eviction from a second property because they can't afford rent. No sympathy here from me.

The DWP stick to a formula on how much they think you need to live on, barring all luxuries, holidays, etc. And they demand full documentary proof of almost every outgoing with receipts to prove that you lived within their financial formula and did not spend money to become eligible for benefits of any kind. This includes bank statements.

Been there, done that, after a small windfall meant too much "savings" and therefore a drop in benefits. They allowed me, over several months, to slowly reduce my savings by paying for a car repair, winter coats for the family, clothing for interviews, and similar "necessary" outgoings.

To blow £50k in such a short time on "luxuries" including "designer clothes" would not sit well with the DWP. And don't forget that the DWP can find out how much you have in any bank or whatever, and can follow large transfers to other accounts.

If they were rich, they could have spent the money as they wished. But because they are poor and unemployed they can't.

A bit daft blowing the lot in one year though. I did a quick calculation, and I reckon our family of 4 adults could have lived quite well on that sum (paying all bills 100%) for about 3 years.

Is "The Mirror" ok? Well for this anyway.

Should be seen as an educational article to show to be careful in that situation.

The expression more money than sense comes to mind.

I think the fact that somebody else won £50k on a lottery is what irritating people most on here...

Might be DM scrounger clickbait BUT these people aren't a drain on the UK taxpayers. They live in Guernsey ergo they aren't part of the UK.

Actually, the reason given for Guernsey Social Security not giving them any benefits was
Quote:

The couple say benefit officials have accused them of not being able to account for £24,000 - around half of the lottery money.

Surely they haven't been trying to stash it away to make themselves look poor ...

I can't credit that pair with the intelligence to do that. I suspect it's more that 'dealers' and takeaways don't give receipts.
