Islamophobic hate crimes triple since Paris shootings

Quote:

The number of Muslims attacked each week in London has more than tripled since the Paris attacks, figures show.

The Met said in the week prior to the attacks on 13 November there were 24 recorded Islamophobic incidents. Two weeks after there were 76.

Mussurut Zia from the Muslim Women's Network UK said the community was "fearful" but people of other faiths had come forward in "solidarity".

The Met said "regretfully" hate crime increased during "difficult times"...

... Recorded Islamophobic offences:

Week ending 10 November - 24

Week ending 17 November - 46

Week ending 24 November - 76

It's sad but to be expected I'd have thought and thankfully the numbers are still fairly small in a city as huge and diverse as London. It'd be interesting to know more about the nature of these crimes and their perpetrators as well as whether the number of hate crimes committed by Muslims has increased at all. I have no idea if that data is available however.

So far as people 'noticing others looking at them oddly', I've no doubt that happens more after such outrages but wonder whether some of that perception is due to their own heightened sensitivities. It's very easy to assume all sorts of things when you feel vulnerable isn't it. In any event we're talking about a small minority as always so in just the same way that we all know the vast majority of Muslims aren't terrorists we also know the vast majority of non-Muslims aren't Islamophobes.
