Very slow evening speeds
I have the 100mbs service and during the day, using Speedtest.net, it shows download speeds around 100mbs.
However, in the evening speeds drop to anywhere between 5 and 20mbs. Anyone any ideas on why this is and is there a fix for it? |
Re: Very slow evening speeds
Congestion?, sounds like an over subscribed area. When it hits the busy times your experiencing the drop in speed.
What area are you in?. Try a search to see if anyone else is having the same issues in your area but it seems like it is a oversubscribed issue. |
Re: Very slow evening speeds
Agreed that this probably sounds like congestion. It might be worth setting up a ThinkBroadband monitor and/or posting on the VM community forum to query this.

The problem is this. With VM, the cable (coaxial) that supplies the broadband to your home is shared with hundreds of other households in your area. This cable 'segment' can only provide a certain amount of Mb/s. Typically this is around 1Gb/s but since this is shared with the hundreds of other customers the amount you get will be limited at peak times (e.g. in the evenings). There are typically two fix scenarios. 1. If the cable segment still has some free channel capacity then VM can use this by simply adding more equipment at their end. 2. If the cable segment is using all available broadband channels then VM need to physically split this segment into two or more segments. This is where holes have to be dug, new cables pulled in and more. The first case can be done quickly and cheaply. The second case can take a very long time to implement. Unfortunately only VM will know which situation your cable segment is in. Ian |
