VPN Virgin

Hello i have 152mb broadband SH2 in modem mode (obvs) and a Asus NT-R65u router which TBH apart from the dodgy media server which i long gave up on it has been rock solid but it has never had real custom firmware support, but now i need to move into the world of VPN and although my current router supports openvpn i am interested by the router plugin for VyprVPN which allows you to set different servers for different devices on your system. The plug in only works on Tomato firmware which my router wont run so my question is, which tomato supported router would you guys advise for reliability and features?
Asus RT-AC68U/R
or
Netgear R7000
Cheers.

out of the two I would defo go for the Linksys. I will never trust Netgear again.

Have you read reviews on smallnetbuilder? I normally go there and weigh up all the features and performance to see what's best for my needs.

Excellent advice from Sniper.

Re: VPN Virgin

They have the 2 up against each other because they are almost identical in spec and its swings and roundabouts but they say the Netgear has slightly higher overall throughput and would probably stump for that, but long term reliability who scores better, asus or netgear, General Maximus seems to dislike Netgear but doesn't give his reason, i used to have a Netgear Gigabit switch but after a couple of years i realised it became so slow, and really wasn't a gigabit switch any more.

Another option maybe the Asus ac56u i have asus merlin firmware installed on mine my vpn supplier provides a vpn applet so it runs directly through the routers firmware

Re: VPN Virgin

Does that give you the option to assign different devices different vpn servers though?

looool, I was in a rush to go out get out this morning and I was trying to find a good Linksys router you which would support tomato but as I was running out of time I gave up and meant to say Asus out of the two. It is funny how your mind plays tricks on you.

The throughput shown in reviews is going to be irrelevant if you are going to replace the firmware, unless they've reviewed it with exactly the same custom firmware you intend to use.

Be aware that Vypr (part of Giganews' stable) is hyper vigilant about logging VPN customers' usage. They will not hesitate to pass on your details to relevant interested parties if they suspect you have inadvertently done something you shouldn't. I wouldn't use it for free, let alone pay their prices. Just a heads up.

I'm sure you only want to use a VPN to improve your routing and download Linux ISOs even faster than before, but I thought it was worth a mention.

Re: VPN Virgin

Is there another vpn that will give me the option for each connected device, really need control over smart tv, for downloading those free Linux ISO's.

Re: VPN Virgin

No I've not seen anything like that before, it's a nice re-use of open source firmware. You can obviously connect to any VPN server using a suitable router, but those specific features are Vypr-specific. Whether they're any use to you considering your IP will be logged for 30 days+ in order to cooperate with copyright notices etc is down to you. Personally I'd use pfSense and set it up manually on a real no-logging provider. Ironically the US has no mandatory data retention laws, so if they wanted to Vypr/Goldenfrog could easily set up the VPN as a zero knowledge network. They choose not to.
