Just a quick question on wired and wireless

I've a superhub and I have it currenlt in modem mode as I have a seperate router and wireless bridge off it to give wired access to my pc and wireless to ipad etc. My router is now dying and I want to use the superhub as wired and wireless. I know this is probably a daft and simple question but how do I set this up? Can I just plug my wired pc cat cable into the back of the superhub and switch to wireless and will that work? I'm loathe to just do it incase I lose all internet access full stop! Sorry if this is in the wrong place or not the place to ask.

Oh also my old router had a firewall built in- does the superhub have that and how do I check it's on?

Simple answer is : yes, the superhub can provide a firewall (and the other functions of an Internet gateway router).

All you need to do it take the superhub out of modem mode and place it in router mode.

In this mode it provides four Ethernet ports and (depending on version) 2.4 and 5GHz wireless. If you don't want the wireless capability then this can be switched off.

Out of interest, which superhub do you have and what make any model are the other pieces of kit? Why do you think the router is failing?

Navigate to http://192.168.100.1 and set the hub back to router mode. Or just pinhole reset the hub if you have trouble - this will turn the hub into a wireless router (With built-in modem). However, I'd advise you to just bite the bullet and buy yourself a decent wireless router replacement.

absolutely as Kush said. I'll forgo one of my shub lectures on this occasion but suffice to say that any free router isn't going to be the best router. If you have got a shub1 (which you will have if you are on 50mbits) the wireless is just a joke. You wouldn't know any better if that is all you ever had but as you have had a proper router then you should notice the difference big time. The firewall also creates no end of problems and VM have gone so far as to disable it by default.

I strongly recommend you invest in a new wireless router so you can continue to have reliable wireless performance for your phones and tablets and you can also change your dns server and lots of other handy things as well.

If you choose to ignore our advice you will find a wireless tab somewhere in the gui and you will need to either specify 2.4ghz or 5ghz for the wireless channel, a name (so you can identify the network) and a password (not the same one which you used to log into the shub).

If you had the Superhub before you got 50Mbit - eg. you were on M/L30, then it's probably the older (poor wifi) SHUB 1.

If you got it on the upgrade to 50 (like I did) it may be the SHUB 2 - has 2.4 & 5GHz simultaneous wifi - as I understand it, the SHUB 1 could do 2.4 or 5.0 but not both - and the SHUB 2 is an all round better performer.

Correct. The Superhub 2 Wifi also goes up to 450Mbps, while the Superhub 1's "only" did 300Mbps.
