How much is too much?
I know Virgin no longer have download limits nor slow downloads from http.
What im wondering is from everyone what download limits would people consider a heavy user per month. We have 3 people living here and usually per month we can use between 120-170GB per month. This month so far we have hit 181.7GB. So as i said my question is what would people consider as heavy use? |
re: How much is too much?

I would say 5TB/month. I have done 3TB in one month before but that wasn't going full speed 24/7. Although you might think your 100Gb is a lot for you, users have different needs and uses for their connection and I would definitely think of 1TB/month as being average.

You phrased one question in a curious way; with the phrase "download limits". Exactly what are you getting at? What will the answers enable you to decide? |
Re: How much is too much?
I would guesstimate this question has been triggered by the man seeing visible contention on his cable at peak times.
The answer I would probably give, beyond a simple figure, is that it's as much as the ISP says it is, and they should accordingly scale their network to accommodate it while supplying a reasonable level of performance. I tend to consider reasonable as being that a customer should either never or almost never experience speeds equal to those of the tier below. Here's mine for the past 3 months. The heavy month was due to the ISP counting uploads and downloads, and our downloading and uploading for someone who was about to travel around the world for a year and wanted to get her content together and then all in one place on the cloud :) https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2015/05/1.png |
Re: How much is too much?
So maybe there is no absolute figure, just one that is relevant to your segment and what it can sustain. On ours, we regularly get <50M on a 152M tier in the evenings and have done for the last 3 yrs or so .. Have said that, there is no way VM are going to zone download/upload limits so it is a moot point any way.
I don't consider us as "heavy users" plus we have the download constraint in the evenings and weekends. Here's our usage for the last few months: Code:
Date Reception Transmission Total |
Re: How much is too much?
Some interesting figures, i thought i was a heavy user using what we do.

Re: How much is too much?
200GB a month for a full household really isn't a lot. Between 4 or 5 people, that's about 1-2GB a day each which isn't a lot if you stream music or video.

Re: How much is too much?
I would say 1TB would be a heavy user 1-200GB is nothing in a family house.

Re: How much is too much?
I would say that any amount is almost entirely arbitrary. We all use the internet for different things.
