Eureka! Black gold in Gatwick.

There could be up to 100 billion barrels of oil onshore beneath the South of England, says exploration firm UK Oil & Gas Investments (UKOG).

Last year, the firm drilled a well at Horse Hill, near Gatwick airport, and analysis of that well suggests the local area could hold 158 million barrels of oil per square mile.

But only a fraction of the 100 billion total would be recovered, UKOG admits.

The North Sea has produced about 45 billion barrels in 40 years.

"We think we've found a very significant discovery here, probably the largest [onshore in the UK] in the last 30 years, and we think it has national significance," Stephen Sanderson, UKOG's chief executive told the BBC.

Well obviously they are going to say it's in England. It's really in Scotland and they'll just use an slanted drill to extract it.

I was in a small shop in one of the less salubrious areas of Scotland a few days before the referendum and two of the local oxygen thieves were talking in complete seriousness about what they'd buy once the yes campaign won and they got 'freedom' and 'their oil money'

How long before the government does deals to export most of it and keep our reliance on over seas oil saying its cheaper as they did with coal.

The difference being that oil costs about the same to extract on land irrespective of where it comes from once the well is drilled whereas the UK coal is often in geologically difficult areas and has to be dug out of deep colliaries by a load of bolshie miners.

The imported stuff comes from vast open cast mines cheaply excavated by machine. Not comparable at all.

At least Labour will not need to sell all the gold and raid the pension pots again for a while :D

IIRC Different sources of oil have different uses, eg North Sea oil tends to be used in the petrochemical industry because there isn't any sand in it. North sea oil won't tend to be used for petrol etc.

Please if this turns out to be lucrative let the proceeds go into a sovereign wealth fund, not get urinated away on tax cuts or increased spending.

If this pans out be it labour or Tories they will squander it in pursuit of their ideology and we as a nation will be poorer at the end of it.

Wishing is one thing as we well know but reality is another.
