Tories fail in bid to oust Speaker

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-32061097

The Tories called a vote late last night to change the rules on how the speaker is elected, changing it to a secret vote, in a bid that was seen as an attempt to oust Bercow as the speaker.

Seems like it backfired with MP after MP laying into Hague for holding the vote along with the whips for way it was done. They held Tory MPs back under the pretence of a meeting with the Election campaign advisor and hoped a lot of the other MPs would be back home preparing for their own election campaigns.

They lost the vote anyway with Labour obviously delighting in the chance to defeat the Tories but also with a good amount of Tory rebels who seemed to vote No on a matter of principle over the way it was conducted. Especially Charles Walker who made this speech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbL3IMbYvAY&spfreload=10

Everyone is cyclical about Parliament but this puts them in a good light I would think. Seeing the Tory MPs rebel on a matter of Parliamentary principle over the way such votes should be conducted shows that a lot of them treat their roles seriously.

I am pleased about this.

I think Bercow is an odious little oik (I had a lot of run-ins with him when he was in the Young Conservatives), but they went about this totally the wrong way.

Don't worry Richard as the other parties do that as well.

What impressed me was the Tories who no doubt agree with unseating Bercow but, outraged at the perceived abuse of procedure, voted against it. It's pleasing to see MPs that are above taking advantage of such scheming on a point of principle.

Why don't the Tories run against him? His constituency is favourable to them and, if they win, then they get a extra seat they badly need and oust Bercow in the process. I know that conventionally the parties don't challenge the speaker but it's more democratic than the shoddy way Hague and Gove went about this.

Hague looks rightly embarrassed. I want to see the face of Gove and Cameron who turned up later.

Gove is a disaster. I don't understand why he keeps getting given high profiles/important jobs. After he left Education he was made Whip and since then he has lost this vote, seen two MPs defect to UKIP and locked himself in a toilet.

Even when he was charge of Education he didn't seem to have a clue. He thought Mr Men was part of the GCSE History syllabus because he read in the paper (it was a teacher who got his Year 10s to write Mr Men stories of a historical event for younger pupils).
