I dont understand people who do this sort of thing, what do they get out of it?

Its like the mentality of a University student where for some reason it always features a traffic cone.

Money, same as the thieves who nick the war memorial plaques, thing is they're only worth £30 or so normally.

I thought the authorities were clamping down on scrap metal dealers to try and stop this sort of thing being a money spinner for the thieves?

Perhaps the thieves hadn't realised its significance...not excusing the evil deed but maybe there is honour amongst thieves after all. Whatever, it is good that it has been recovered.
