30 day rule for new customers?

A friend of mine has recently moved from Sky where he was paying £110, to VM on the same package for about £80 a month.

However his first bill was about £140 and he wasn't told about this. I understand you pay something in advance but didn't realise it'd be almost a months worth, he had free installation.

When he phoned and queried it he was told something about a 30 day rule??

I'd never heard of it, is it something newish?

He's a bit miffed as it's left him short this month.

It could be he has paid a period less than a billing month, plus a full billing month. It happens. It should revert to the agreed price after that AFAIK.

Indeed. It's always happened. Same as happens if you add services between bills. You get charged from date the service starts to first bill it can be charged on and then one full month in advance.

I guess he must have paid 3 weeks up to the billing date and then the month in advance, that sounds about right.

The bill will show exactly what period he's been charged for.
