Can you Install?

M18 7LJ The Red Brick building first on the right down Wall Way.
The above address is the location of the Manchester Trafalgar Sea Cadet Corps. We have a so called Broadband connection but its barely 512k via WI-FI.
The problem seems to be its a Telephone Line and cannot go any faster. I do not know where the nearest VirginMedia green box is but I would imagine it would involve some roadworks to make the connection. Could you give me any idea of what it would entail for VirginMedia to connect us? or indeed if anyone could at a reasonable cost.

Re: Can you Install?

The postcode checker for that postcode says no virgin media service.

Re: Can you Install?

I have researched as much as I can and am open to any suggestions. As you can see from the location we are near Hyde Road but I think too far for a cost effective connection to be made. Could we use some kind of satellite service?

Have you spoken to VM Business? I'd have thought there were fibres along Hyde Road. Though you are in the middle of a surprisingly big hole in VM residential coverage.

A good candidate for the big expansion announced today.

Or make a casual enquiry at the Holiday Inn Express into how they get their internet? They must have a high speed connection.

According to BT the phone line at Sea Cadets Training Ship Trafa, Hyde Rd, Manchester, M18 7LJ is capable of 80Mbps download and 20Mbps upload on FTTC. You should still be getting a minimum of 1.5Mbps even without FTTC.

Re: Can you Install?

We are opposite Mc Donalds and their Wi-Fi is readable at the lower end of our Building they use 02. The Bandstand is getting back to me and the Hotel thinks its a BT Line operated by a 3rd party, but has a good connection. The Sailing centre next door has only a telephone line and has the same experiences we have. I have checked the BT Broadband availability and cannot see the figures stated above. we are a couple of hundred yards from the nearest Green Box and in my opinion it is not cost effective for either VM or BT to connect us.

If you don't want to use BT Infinity for some incomprehensible reason they will install 330Mbps FTTP at cost for you, typically estimated at about £1000-£3000. Only you can determine if that's cost effective or not.

Re: Can you Install?

Thank you all for your help £1000-£3000 is a bit eye watering so I will leave it at that. I have registered with Virginmedia to be included in its expansion plans but will just have to wait and see.

Re: Can you Install?

So have you actually asked BT for their 80Mbps service?

Re: Can you Install?

As I understood things we can only get that speed with FTTC and only have Copper wire telephone connection.

Are confusing the fibre delivery method. FTTC is fibre to the cabinet and then over the phone wires which will be copper unless you are in an area where they used aluminium.

Re: Can you Install?

WE are with Talk Talk and are getting abysmal speeds. I am obviously missing something the BT chart above is saying what to me? In plain language please.

The chart is saying your copper wire telephone connection is capable of 80Mbps service.

Thank you for your reply I will contact Talk Talk and put it to them.
