Poor download / speed

My virgin network should be around 150Mb,

When i connect my laptop directly to the router i get around 90Mbps, which i am happy with.

When i connect my desktop i only get 7.47Mbps. I have un installed any programs like PC Tuneup that may be affecting my download speed, but have not got a clue what else to do to increase my speed.
Upload speed is 8.61Mbps - Again happy with this speed.

All connections via Same Ethernet cable.

This has got to be a setting on the desktop somewhere. Desktop is a packard bell, approx 4 years old.
I am running Windows 8.1
Any advice appreciated.

Re: Poor download / speed

Try connecting both PC & Laptop directly to the Modem.

Secondly what router do you have?

As the router might not be able to take above 100Mbps, as you spped hits 90Mbps this suggest that you router cannot handle 150Mbps.

Have tried them both directly connected to the router, results are above.

Not too concerned about getting over 100, would like to get above 50 though.

Re: Poor download / speed

Presumably with the 152 VM broadband you have a superhub. Are you connecting your computer wired, not wireless, direct to the superhub and not to a router? When you connect the PC wired, what connection speed does your network port properties show?

Have you installed current network drivers to your computer? Default drivers may not allow the card to operate at it's potential.

When doing speed tests make sure everything else on your network s disconnected so nothing else can be interfering with your results.

If problems continue tell us the make / model of your HP computer, what the make / model is of your router

Superhub 2, Wired Directly to pc or laptop.

Laptop wired direct gets 89 Mbps, Desktop wired gets 6.9Mbps,
not sure how to find connection speed on network port properties. but when i look in Local Area Connection Status it shows Shows speed as 10Mbps.

Windows advises best driver already in use.

PC Packard bell, Motherboard MCP73T, using superhub 2

Re: Poor download / speed

OK so something is stopping your desktop getting a good connection to the Superhub 2 Your wired connection speed between the Superhub and your PC is only giving you 10Mbps, and that is why your download is pants.

In the properties for your network port see if there is an option to look for advanced settings, in windows 7 that has a setting for Speed and Duplex which should normally be auto but perhaps something isn't set correctly so try a manual value using the highest options available.

Don't trust that Windows knows the correct driver. Go to the support section of the Packard Bell site, lookup your computer and download the latest network driver on there. Uninstall the existing drivers and then install the new driver.

You may need to look at the specification of your Packard Bell. It is possible that the network port may only operate at 10/100Mbps, (I've seen some laptops even today that don't do gigabit speeds), so you won't be able to max out your broadband, but you should at least get 100Mbps connection.

Check and perhaps swap the ethernet lead between the PC and superhub. It is possible that is faulty.

Re: Poor download / speed

Thank you, lifesaver. Speed and Duplex was set at 10Mbps, Changed this to Auto, restarted pc and now getting 86Mbps on pc.

I knew it would be something simple, but did not have a clue on what it would be.
