BT G.fast nationwide deployment in 2016-7 - pilots in Huntingdon & Gosforth

Link.

Going to take a long time to roll out though, as it's a ton more involved than the FTTC roll-out, but this may explain VM's turning the speed dial up this year. Competition is good for those who can get both, and not so bad for those with just a single option! :)

BT CEO Gavin Patterson today set out the company’s ambition to transform the UK broadband landscape from superfast to ultrafast.

He revealed that BT plans to deliver much faster broadband for homes and small businesses via a widespread deployment of “G.fast”. This is an innovative technology that BT will test in two pilot locations starting this Summer.

G.fast will help BT deliver ultrafast speeds of up to 500Mbps to most of the UK within a decade. Deployment will start in 2016/17, subject to the pilots being successful.

Early tests show G.fast is capable of delivering a range of speeds depending on how close the technology is to a customer’s premises. BT expects to offer initial speeds of a few hundred megabits per second to millions of homes and businesses by 2020. Speeds will then increase to around 500Mbps as further industry standards are secured and new kit is developed.

That upgrade will depend however on there continuing to be a stable regulatory environment that supports investment.
Only a few weeks back we had this news

Apologies if this sounds a stupid question but how does this announcement impact Vectoring ? Will that still go ahead sooner or is it part of G.fast ?

Doesn't impact vectoring on VDSL in any way.

The regulatory environment comment is, of course, a swipe at Ofcom. BT will e wanting the same concessions they received for their VDSL rollout.

So is this going to be via FTTDP? If so are they going to be including exchange-only lines? Furthermore what about exchange only lines with an in-building DP? FTTB?

Or are we going to be left in the slow lane with 12Mbps while the neighbours get 500Mbps+

Pilots will test various deployment depths, from using the existing FTTC cabinets to colo stuff through to using FTTDP and FTTB.

So in other words BT "expects to offer initial speeds of a few hundred megabits per second to millions of homes and businesses by 2020" but don't actually know how they're going to do it yet?

Testing to see how little they can spend while achieving the claimed target basically.
