Auschwitz survivors mark liberation

Quote:

About 300 Auschwitz survivors have gathered at the site of the former Nazi death camp to mark the 70th anniversary of its liberation.

The commemoration will be held at the site in southern Poland where 1.1 million people, most of them Jews, were killed between 1940 and 1945.

This reminder of what awful horrors man is capable of certainly puts things into perspective. It demonstrates perfectly what can happen to those (whether Jews or not) whose only crime is to be different in some way - innocent men, women and children. No doubt the likes of IS would have no compunction about following the same route, on the same scale and for the same reasons if they were allowed to...

It's vital that these horrors are remembered and learned from.

Indeed Osem these horrors should never ever be forgotten but whether they are learned remains to be seen as usually somewhere down the line history generally repeats itself....

As the Mau Mau, by way of example, know only too well.

Yes and as time goes on and we remain largely untouched by such horrors, the danger is that most people start to believe it can never happen again in Europe.

Indeed complacency is one of our greatest enemies.

It's quite unfortunate that as this anniversary comes along we are seeing a new wave of anti-semitism that is sadly being ignored.

Quite. If it weren't for the evidence which was obtained by various means at the time, it's not hard to imagine that many people today would doubt it happened at all. The fact that some still do is as amazing as it is shocking.
