64QAM Upstream modulation?
 

It must have been a few years now since upstream improvements took place on my segment in Gateshead, upgraded to two channels QAM16.

My question how much of the network now uses 64QAM upstream modulation and is there a schedule available to show upstream improvements?

My SNR kicks about at around minimum tolerance so thought maybe noise was a reason for me not utilising 64QAM?

For me the improvements to upstream are more important now than download bandwidth, as a gamer I am hoping that QAM64 upstream modulation has the same mass improvement to my online gaming experience as the two channel upgrade did.

Unsure on one and on the other there is no schedule as it doesn't change anything from the user point of view.

You can't see your upstream SNR. There are a few reasons why you may not be on it, a big one being that it's not needed yet.

Won't make the blindest bit of difference unless you have problems with pings at peak times, sorry!

Your right about problems with pings at peak times and this is what I am hoping the upgrade addresses thanks. I thought that they would be a link between upstream and downstream SNR? Interesting.

Okay then this will help with those issues if they are due to upstream congestion. If they are due to downstream it won't :(

If i were you i'd give up on hoping for any gaming improvements. I spent years complaining about jitter to VM, unfortunately it's always going to be present in some capacity due to the DOCSIS network and due to congestion some get it worse than others, but it's still there even on the best VM connections. I've seen very very few BQM graphs based on VM connections that show little to no jitter.

Your best bet would be to go to a BT Wholesale fibre package offered by the other telephone companies. They aren't immune to congestion or lag, but i've seen a hell of a lot more in comparison that show what a connection should look like. Hell, i've had a 5mbit ADSL2+ line for the last 3 years and would keep that over getting VM back any day.

Gotta disagree with that. My son often has to switch over from our BT Infinity circuit to VM in order to obtain best latency and lowest jitter for his CoD type gaming. What would you make of our BQM graph shown below?

People only tend to start running them when they have issues which may explain a bit.

Netcode seems to have as big, or a bigger impact on gaming than 4ms of provider jitter now.

I completely disagree here.

I am on VM 152mb package and when i run a pingtest on pingtest.net my jitter is always either 2 or 3ms whatever the time of day.

I have a friend who is on Sky ADSL2+ his jitter at its lowest is 7ms and his graph is a lot worse than mine.

I am on BT 12Mb package and when I run a pingtest on pingtest.net my jitter is always 0ms whatever the time of day.

I looked through a lot of bqm graphs back in the day and I'd say that is up there with the best with regards to virginmedia.
