Quick Question - Internal Consumer Unit
 

Hi,

My very first post. I am a Sky customer and have been for a couple of years now. Now the previous owners of the property I now own I assume were Virgin Media customers and I would like to know if it is possible to ask Virgin Media to remove the box they install, internally, in a persons property? I am led to believe this an Internal Consumer Unit and is usually where connections for TV & Broadband are made coming from a box externally.

There are 2 reasons for my asking.

1. I intend to have some work done to strip the walls back down to the brick and re-plaster
2. I never intend to have any services with Virgin Media as I am very happy with my current provider.

Not sure if it's something they do, but IF they do it would cost. You could go to the external box, open it,normally held together with a screw, and disconnect the cable there. You will find a cable coming up from the border or grass, this will be the cable they pull to your property and then it is connected to the cable that is then feeding the different rooms. This would be the cable you could remove.

I really wouldn't like to do that as I don't want to damage things and end up with a huge bill, nor end up with the possibility of affecting other customers of Virgin Media in my local area.

VM would want to charge to do it, though I'm not certain how they would do that as you're not a customer. Just do it yourself. Even if you cause an issue on the network (unlikely), VM will never be able to show you did anything they could charge you for.

In the box on the outside wall there should be an F to F in-line coupler. Just unscrew the connector that runs into your property from there. You can then safely remove all the rest of the installation. If it's still connected at the street cabinet then it's VM's problem but leaving the external box intact would help any future resident that wants VM's services.

just unscrew the cover inside, disconect the cables inside. the cable that goes to the outside you will have to snip the connector off then pull it through the wall to where it goes to the brown box {Omni box} and do as suggested above disconnect there.
