Outlook not working when tethering via virgin mobile

Need help!
Away from home for a period of time. Took my laptop with me and use USB tethering to access internet. I noticed my NTL account does not work properly any more. It receives email no problem but could not send any email out. It returns '530 authentication required (VM401)'.
Any solutions?

What are your outbound SMTP settings? Make sure they match the ones here: Email settings for addresses ending in @ntlworld.com

Could be because Virgin Mobile block tethering

All the internet would be offline if they were doing so.

No.

530 authentication required (VM401) means exactly what it says on the tin.

When you are not connected to Virgin Media's cable network you are required to authenticate to send mail. Virgin Media, like most providers, do not allow just anyone to send mail via their servers without logging in first.

Virgin Mobile (the mobile network) technically has nothing to do with Virgin Media (the cable network). They are separate networks. Virgin Mobile is seen as an external network and all external users are required to authenticate.

However sometimes the rules for on-net authentication aren't the same as those for off-net.

For instance, if you are on-net you may still have old details in which only use the first part of your email address as the username or your SMTP port is set to be 25. This can be allowed this on-net due to historical compatibility and because your VM IP address is logged at the same time. However if you are off-net you have to use the correct current details, as there is no other traceability.

My current seeting is different from the link above. I changed to the setting to match the link, then I could not get email at all. So I had to change back so that I can at least read email.

Mobile tethering is working, that is how I can post here (right now).

Maybe next time when I am back to home, take the laptop and try. I tned to believe it si due to 'Virgin mobile is not part of Virgin network'. It is actually part of EE?

Internal error [530 Authentication Required (VM401)]

I'm getting this error on sending emails too, nothing changed here AFAIK. Sending from Opera on Vista.

---------- Post added at 14:53 ---------- Previous post was at 14:30 ----------

All I did to get smtp to work again was to set smtp authentication to ON, then enter username as my FULL ntlworld email address, and then enter my password.

I didn't have to change the pop or smtp ports or addresses as they say (in fact that screwed it all up when I tried).

Using Opera on Vista.

Hope this helps.
