Best idea ever: The Social Supermarket

http://www.itv.com/news/london/updat...cent-discount/

After reading this article, l thought, why on earth wasn't it thought of before.

Yes, it helps the people that are on benefits. And those looking for work, or are in debt.

I am totally surprised why other companies haven't done this before. Yet, you will get people say 'what about food poising etc' When you are hungry, its food at the end of the day.

I believe that Scotland runs similar shops - i.e. Second day stuff, If any Scottish members, please put me right on this one.

Great idea.

It's a great idea, Arthur.

Not sure I agree with you re "food poisoning" and "when you are hungry, it's food at the end of the day".

Having had food poisoning once or twice, you may as well have not eaten it (or anything else in the previous 24 hours), as more seems to come out than went in (repeatedly).....

We had a small one here. You had to pay a nominal "membership fee" of £1. It ran for ages then suddenly died when the landlord asked for a huge increase in rent. As he also set the electricity rate (very high) so it became impossible to keep open.

The building is still empty several years on.

Hugh, someone actually mentioned that some stores WONT give away out of date products, in case they get sued for giving them Food poisoning.

This was in a previous posting by someone.

It is likely this was for products with an 'use by' date - afaik it is illegal to sell food products past the 'use by'. Food poisoning can kill vulnerable people.

For products marked with a 'best before' date there is no problem. Several stores already exist that sell canned goods, soft drinks, biscuits etc at a discounted price that are past the 'best before'.

I agree the philosophy of this shop, restricting sales to members only, is a good idea.

The nearest equivalent round here is a firm called 'Company Shop' that sell discounted food near the end of its shelf life - this is also members only, but membership is granted only to employees of the manufacturers supplying the products, not those on income support.

Great idea. The "poor" can keep up their mobile phone contracts, cable TV XXL packs, XL BB and still feed their offspring. :dozey:

I don't but so many plead "poverty" whilst still contracted into premium services and i-contracts. It's all a matter of priorities.:erm:

There was a woman on the phone call in on This Morning. she was on about having no money for Xmas. juggling between paying the gas and electric or buying food.

the big shocker was when she said she keeps her fingers crossed that her kids will leave something on their plates so she can have something to eat.

Adam Smith, founder of The Real Junk Food Project, in Armley, Leeds, feeds his punters on goods that would otherwise have been thrown away by supermarkets, independent grocers and food banks.
The 29-year-old trained chef cooks up stews, casseroles, soups and cakes with the unwanted food, charging a “pay as you feel” policy - allowing punters to pay what they feel they can, and if that is nothing, they can help with the washing up.
In just 10 months he has fed 10,000 people on 20 tonnes of unwanted food, raising over £30,000.
It seems to be spreading.
