Senate report on CIA torture claims spy agency lied about 'ineffective' program.
Surprise, surprise.
"The CIA’s post-9/11 embrace of torture was brutal and ineffective – and the agency repeatedly lied and misled the White House, Congress and the public about its usefulness, a milestone report by the Senate intelligence committee released on Tuesday concludes The methods of torture carried out by the CIA were even more extreme than what it portrayed to the George W Bush administration and went beyond techniques already made public through a decade of leaks and lawsuits, which had revealed that agency interrogators subjected detainees to the quasi-drowning known as waterboarding, staged mock executions and revved power drills near their heads." And they are outraged that releasing the report may cause repercussions against America - perhaps not torturing people may have mitigated against that....

That is of course true but the likelihood is that anyone killed or maimed in revenge acts will have had as much knowledge of CIA torture as they did the planning of 9/11.

I watched the chair and vice-chair of the intelligence committee summarise and present the report.
It's alarming on many levels. Ignoring torture the level of incompetence shown as far as rendition, etc, go is astounding. |
