AOL Router Firmware

Are AOL routers able to take firmware updates from the routers manufacturers website or is the one loaded on the router already a custom built firmware for AOL? I've searched AOLs site with no joy. The router is a D-LINK DSL-2680 Hardware Version: A1

Current Firmware Version: v1.11a

There is an update, Version 1.03 on D-Links site.

AOL has their router locked to their own firmware this is why a friend of mine bought a Netgear when he was with AOL.
