Serious fire in Plymouth affecting BBC TV services.

Just been told that the BBC have informed VM that, due to a serious fire, BBC TV services in Plymouth are out of action.

Apparently, a feed will be provided, probably from London, for network programmes. Tonights local news is cancelled and will, hopefully, be provided by a neighbouring region. The region chosen will include some Plymouth news.

I'm assuming that this situation will be the same for other television platforms.

No further details were given to me. Let's just hope to God that nobody was hurt (or worse).

Yes the local news was supposed to come on at around 13.30 Richard but as it was about to come on the screen it just went dark and then about 1 minute later we suddenly got a feed from BBC West l think.

Being of a nosy disposition I couldn't resist seeing what had happened, so ......

A power cut has affected broadcasts by BBC South West.

The outage, which affected the corporation's building in Plymouth, hit its television and radio services.

BBC Spotlight was unable to broadcast its lunchtime bulletin on Tuesday and BBC Radio Devon's FM transmissions were briefly affected.

The BBC said: "We can confirm a problem with the power supply at BBC Plymouth. We are working to resolve the problem and have contingency plans in place."

It added: "The contingency plans are to ensure our services to audiences in the South West are only minimally disrupted.

"BBC Points West will be a joint programme with Spotlight this evening."

BBC Spotlight broadcasts to Cornwall, Devon, and parts of Somerset and Dorset.

Let's just hope that it was just a power cut and that someone was scaremongering as opposed to a serious fire (unless the fire and power cut are interlinked).

I found this report after I found no reports of a serious fire anywhere in Plymouth today. Normally it would have shown up on the Emergency Services web sites but there were no reports whatsoever regarding a serious fire.

What did you end up with at 6.30pm last night? Are your programmes back to normal now?

That's good news. Perhaps it was a serious power cut caused by a small fire and it's been exaggerated or the chinese whispers syndrome has kicked in :D

BBC News team in Bristol took over local news.

Cheers MB.

I've now got to the bottom of what happened. There was a fire which burned through a section of cable involving a "large switch" (whatever that is) and this caused the power failure.
