Superhub 2 being supplied with CAT5 cable

As above, a friend has just had 100mb installed with SH2 and in the box was supplied a CAT5 cable, and as such limited to 100Mb/s on the LAN side, losing out on a few meg, presumably its the same router kit supplied with the 150Mb/s package, surely this is going to cause problems for VM??

Does your friend have a 100Mb or 1Gb Ethernet Card? Cat5e is good for 1Gb Ethernet assuming it's not a faulty cable.

he said cat 5 though and there is a difference. I am assuming he made a type because VM have been supplying modems with cat5e for donkeys and cat5e can handle 1gbit no probs. I am using it on my 152mbit connection now and although it has been replaced, I got a cat5e cable with my vmng300 many years ago when 50mbits first came out and both the modem and my pc said they were connected at 1gbit.

I definitely got a Cat5e with my SH2.

I hand out yellow cat 5s not 5e with a sh2. It seems to still get 152meg, possibly because it's such a small leghth it's syncing at gigabit

Gigabit it specifically designed to work on Cat 5 cable and does not require Cat 5e.

Cat 5 should theoretically carry gigabit up to the maximum 100 metres, though in practice cheaper cables and/or interference often limits that.

(That said the 'Yellow' cables I got with my VM service back in the 'Burgh last decade were 5e)

Yeah guys I did mean '5' and not '5e', just thought it was odd he has a gigabit card and was only connecting at 100Mb, changed the cable for a CAT 5e and gigabit straight away

Bad cable. Over the lengths of cable that are supplied with home routers unless the cable is genuinely broken Cat 5 should easily handle 1Gb.

Even if the cable were too long the symptoms are more likely to be PHY errors, not auto-negotiation at 100Mb. One or more of the pairs in the cable was knacked.

Should I phone Virgin, I didn't get any cable with the supplied Superhub2!

I very much doubt they'll send you one, they only send out complete units and they aren't going to send you another shub2 for the sake of a patch cable. Get one for £3 the next time you pop in to Asda

No, there was definitely a code for an ethernet cable on the system when I was last there. SRD33 if I recall correctly.

Got my Superhub 2 yesterday. No cable in the box for me either.
