can SSD SATA3 work on SATA 2?

if i want my computer to run faster do i need SSD?
will Solid State Drive SATA3 work on SATA 2.0? will there be any improvement?

Sata 3 is backward compatible. The drive will slow it's interface down to the Sata 2 speed. I think there miight be some improvement, but I'm not sure how much.

You won't get the full sata 3 speed on a sata 2 interface but you will still get an improvement in speed using any SSD if it is replacing a normal disk drive.

If the sata 3 drive is a similar price to a sata 2 or you plan to upgrade hardware in the future, then no reason not to get the sata 3 based ssd.

SATA II is 3Gb/s i.e up to 300MB/s

SATA III is 6Gb/s i.e up to 600MB/s

In practice the SSDs don't get to operate quite at that speed. Depending on the model, manufacturers will typically cite speeds for most current better drives of between 500MB/s and 550MB/s with variations for read and write. You can get cheaper drives that show wide differences between read and write. Of course these are maximums and other system factors can get in the way.

Sandisk (the first google I found, not necessarily a recommendation) suggest

.

Hard drives will have a wider variation in speed, both read and write, and even access time. The moving parts get in the way and obviously if data is scattered on the drive it's going to make hard work of it. Theoretically speeds of 50MB/s to even 120MB/s might be achieved.

I did have a HDD, only 5400 rpm in my 2010 lappy. To give it a bit more potency I put a basic SSD in it. There was a noticeable difference in boot up times, but otherwise, for the stuff that I use that for, the SSD is of little benefit.

Agreed.

An SSD is in most cases the single biggest and most effective component to upgrade in any machine, even if capped to SATA2/SATA1 speeds. The main advantage comes from near-zero seek times, not the sequential throughput - getting 300MB/sec or so is easy with just two hard drives in R0. But such a solution won't be nearly as fast in real use as even a 150MB/sec SSD.

I put a 250GB SSD in my 2008 laptop at the same time as upgrading to Windows 8.1.

So glad I did, as for £100 it saved me spending £600 or more on a new one as I wouldn't see any gain in performance for day to day usage over what I've now got.

I bought the Samsung 840 Evo http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00E391OX6 which gets very good reviews across multiple sites.
